iCare Partners with AIA

The face of compassion comes in various forms – even through sports.

aia1iCare, the Jesus is Lord (JIL) Church Worldwide’s compassion ministry, concluded 2011 with a distinct gift-giving program in partnership with international sports organization, Athletes in Action (AIA). iCare and AIA sponsored a Christmas gift-giving cum basketball fest in Barangay Milagrosa, Project 4, Quezon City last December 21, 2011.

This program was a blessing to 200 families who received generous noche buena packages.

aia3Coach Sebastian “Potit” De Vera, AIA national director for basketball, explained the reason behind the partnership: “For 20 years that we are here, okay yung programs namin. Andun yung harvest. Pero yung follow through, pag-nurture ng harvest ay napuputol dahil wala kaming churches na ka-partner… (For 20 years that we are here, our programs are okay. There are harvests. But the follow through, the nurturing of harvests, stops since we do not have partner churches),” he said.

“I think Bro. Eddie is the one who is very understanding, optimistic of the role of sports ministry in gathering the harvest. We needed that,” De Vera added.

AIA opened its chapter in the Philippines 20 years ago.

aia2One of the event’s highlights was the participation of popular basketball star Chris Tiu. An athlete since 10, Tiu helps AIA carry out its mission. “I believe in the thrust of the organization. You’re not just being an athlete but you are doing action – bringing something to the community, bringing God closer to people through sports,” he said.

Other AIA ambassadors in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) include Rain or Shine Elasto Painters Jeffrei Chan, Jireh Ibanez and Paul Lee; Petron Blaze Boosters Dennis “Denok” Miranda and Alex Cabagnot, among others.

“We try to share God to sports people. We try to disciple them,” coach De Vera said.

aia4iCare Administrator Irene Mamangon said it was just the start of a partnership with AIA. “Mas marami pa kaming partnership in the future. Hindi lang Noche Buena but also some activities like helping the underprivileged. (We will have more

partnerships in the future. Not just Noche Buena but also some activities like helping the underprivileged),” she said.
